Parklea Correctional Centre is located in Parklea, New South Wales, 40 kilometres north-west of Sydney.
Parklea has been managed by GEO on behalf of Corrective Services NSW since 2009. It is one of New South Wales' busiest correctional centres.
Parklea's primary role is to safely and securely house over 1000 adult male remand and sentenced prisoners. Remand prisoners are held for the period leading up to, and during, their trial whilst a smaller number of sentenced prisoners are at Parklea to complete offending behaviour programs and to undertake community work placements prior to their release.
In a world first, Parklea transferred from public management to GEO management whilst remaining a fully operational correctional centre. The period from contract award to GEO assuming management was just 30 days.
General Manager's Message
"Parklea Correctional Centre works closely with Corrective Services NSW to ensure the safe, secure and humane custody of prisoners, with an active focus on reducing reoffending behaviour so that we may contribute to safer communities.
Parklea are committed to delivering better corrections through the provision of the highest level of offender services and programs to support and encourage the active participation by prisoners in addressing their offending behaviours. We aspire to contribute to safer communities through the effective preparation of prisoners for reintegration back into their communities.
Parklea seeks to work actively with all stakeholders to inspire a full commitment to better corrections and safer communities."
Peter Ma’a, Parklea Correctional Centre General Manager
Parklea partners with Police and Community Youth Clubs through sponsorships and the donation of equipment and staff volunteers.
GEO assumed management of Parklea through an incident-free transfer of just 30 days duration, after contract award. This world-leading management transfer was recognised in the NSW Parliament as a model of best practice.
The REFRAIN resettlement program, and the Works Release Centre in which it operates, has a reoffending rate well under 10 per cent. REFRAIN is based on research which shows that a mentor during the immediate post-release period significantly reduces the risk of re-offending.
Parklea performs well against key correctional indicators.
Recognising the need for a motivational program to address substance abuse, which is recognised as a major cause of offending, Parklea developed the OFFIT program, whose evaluation indicates a significant increase in prisoners' motivation to change.
